Daniel Arsham’s Columns Completed At Aventura Mall AVENTURA, Fla. - (May 15, 2009) –Turnberry for the Arts, Turnberry Associates’ cultural initiative combining contemporary art and education, recently unveiled its newest addition to the Aventura Mall collection. Native Miami artist Daniel Arsham’s Columns, 24-foot by 17-foot sculptures made of steel, wood and drywall, was installed on the mall’s second floor near the Macy’s entrance.
The sculptures are exact replicas of the mall’s columns, except they are “broken” and appear to grow and erode simultaneously (see adjacent picture). This is typical of Arsham’s art, in which he focuses on reworking the architectural and natural forms of everyday experience into models with surreal and uncanny effects. At the age of 25, he was selected by legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham to collaborate on a new production for his celebrated dance company, which had its world premiere in Miami in 2007. Arsham’s first solo museum exhibition was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
“Daniel Arsham is one of the most promising young artists working today. His sculptures subtly transform space and time, creating a unique and contemplative experience for the viewer,” said Bonnie Clearwater, executive director and chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. “It’s wonderful to have a major site specific work by Daniel on view at Aventura Mall.”
Recognizing the positive impact that art can have upon people of all ages and all walks of life, the mission of Turnberry for the Arts is to enhance the experiences in innovative ways of local residents and visitors from around the world. Other works on permanent display at Aventura Mall include Eye Benches by Louise Bourgeois, Walking Figure by Donald Baechler, Back of a Snowman by Gary Hume, Florida’s Soul by Jaume Plensa, Suzanne Walking in Skirt and Top and Julian Walking in T-Shirt and Shorts by Julian Opie, Untitled by Jorge Pardo, Acquired Required Desired Admired All Within The Realm of Possibility by Lawrence Weiner, Tree of Knowledge by Tom Otterness and the interactive indoor playground Rainbow Valley that was created by Friends With You.

“Featuring a sculpture by Daniel Arsham is a reflection not only of his incredible talent but Turnberry’s ongoing commitment to South Florida artists,” explained Jackie Fletcher, director of Turnberry for the Arts. “The piece is very subtle and has already sparked a great deal of thought and interest from our visitors. They seem to come upon the sculpture naturally and are immediately captivated by it.”
